Documents concerning Indian lands in Connecticut, 1686-1760.

Individual documents relating to Indian peoples in Connecticut, mostly concerning land. The earliest document is a land grant of 500 acres to John Mason, signed by Governor Robert Treat. Two documents date from 1738. The first appears to be an agreement with John and Sam Uncas and other natives who signed the document with the English settlers. The second document is a copy of Jonathan Sharpe's arguments upholding a court's judgment in favor of Indian rights to land. In 1760, the General Assembly passed an act prohibiting people from taking wood from Indian lands and a copy of that act is part of this collection. The final undated document is a memorial from Nicholas Hallum to the Lords Commissioners for Trade and Plantations, complaining about government treatment of the Indians.
